Recording

Chrome says TapeBooth can't use my camera or microphone

Click the TapeBooth button and choose Set up camera & mic. When Chrome asks, choose Allow on every visit; “Allow this time” only lasts until you close the page.

If you blocked it earlier, open Chrome's settings for TapeBooth (the setup page has a button for it) and set Camera and Microphone to Allow, then try again.

My recording has no computer sound

When Chrome asks what to share, turn on its option to share the tab's sound or the system sound. A tab's sound works everywhere. Your computer's sound, when you share the entire screen, works on Windows and Chromebooks, and on a Mac with macOS 14.2 or later and Chrome 141 or later. Elsewhere, TapeBooth tells you the recording will have your microphone only.

The controls disappeared from the page

The controls live on the tab you started from, and vanish when that tab goes to another page. The recording continues. Click the TapeBooth button to pause or stop, or choose Show controls on this page to bring them back.

Some pages, such as Chrome's own settings pages and the Chrome Web Store, don't allow extensions to show anything on them. They still record; use the TapeBooth menu to stop.

My camera bubble isn't in the recording

In Window or screen mode the bubble is a small floating window. It's recorded when you share your entire screen, but not when you share a single window. In This tab mode it's added to the corner you chose in Settings.

Can I draw on the screen?

Yes, in This tab mode: turn on Draw on the page in the controls, or press Alt+Shift+D. Drawing isn't available when you share a window or your whole screen.

What are the keyboard shortcuts?

Alt+Shift+R starts or stops a recording, Alt+Shift+P pauses and resumes, Alt+Shift+D turns drawing on or off, and Alt+Shift+T opens TapeBooth. Change them under Shortcuts in TapeBooth's Settings, which opens Chrome's shortcut page.

Does it work in incognito windows?

Not yet. TapeBooth doesn't record incognito windows in this version.

Saving and exporting

Where are my recordings?

In the Library: click the TapeBooth button, then Library. Every recording is kept in Chrome on this computer until you delete it. Nothing is uploaded, so recordings don't follow you to another computer; download the ones you want to keep elsewhere.

How do I get an MP4?

Open the recording in the editor and choose Export, then MP4 video. TapeBooth saves recordings as WebM and makes the MP4 by re-encoding, so the export takes a while for long videos. The dialog shows how long before it starts and counts down as it goes.

The original WebM file is also available from Download in the Library. It plays in Chrome and VLC.

Is there a time limit or a recording limit?

No. Record as long and as often as your disk allows. At 1080p an hour takes about 2.3 GB. The Library shows how much space TapeBooth uses, and a recording stops and saves itself before the disk runs out.

Chrome closed in the middle of a recording

Open the Library. TapeBooth finds the interrupted recording and repairs it, usually losing no more than the last second. If it can't be repaired, you can still download the raw file.

How do I delete recordings?

Use Delete on a recording in the Library, or Delete all. Removing TapeBooth from Chrome deletes every recording it kept. See the privacy policy for details.
