Privacy policy
Nothing leaves your device. TapeBooth records, edits and saves your videos on your own computer. It has no servers, and it doesn't collect, send, sell or share anything.
In short
- No servers, no account, no analytics, no advertising, no tracking and no remote code.
- The extension makes no network requests. Your recordings, your camera and your microphone never leave your computer.
- No site access: TapeBooth asks for no host permissions and can't read the sites you visit.
- Recordings are kept in Chrome's private storage for the extension until you delete them or remove TapeBooth.
What TapeBooth handles
- What you choose to record. The tab, window or screen you pick in Chrome's sharing dialog, and its sound if you turn that on. Chrome asks you each time, and you can stop sharing at any moment.
- Your camera and microphone, only while you record, preview your camera or test your microphone. Chrome asks once for permission; you can withdraw it in Chrome's settings for the extension.
- The tab you start from. When you record a tab, TapeBooth places its controls, your drawings and click rings on that page so they appear in the recording. It doesn't read the page's content. It can only do this because you clicked TapeBooth on that tab, and it can't reach the page again after it navigates.
- Your recordings and edits. Each video file, its title, date, length, size, format and thumbnail, and the edits you make (trims, cuts and blur areas).
- Your settings. Default mode, quality, countdown, chosen camera and microphone, camera bubble shape, size, corner and mirroring, sound options, click rings, what opens after recording, and export defaults.
Where your recordings live
- Video files are saved in the browser's private file storage for the extension (the Origin Private File System). Only TapeBooth can open it; other extensions and websites can't. Recordings are saved as WebM files.
- Titles, edits and thumbnails are kept in the extension's IndexedDB database, in the same private storage.
- Exports (the MP4 or GIF you download) are made on your computer, then handed to Chrome as an ordinary download. A temporary copy is cleared the next time you open the editor.
- Settings are kept in Chrome's extension storage on this computer. They are not synced.
Because nothing is uploaded, the developer can't see, recover or delete your recordings for you. Keep a copy of anything important by downloading it.
How to delete your recordings
- One at a time: open the Library from the TapeBooth menu and choose Delete on a recording.
- All at once: in the Library, choose Delete all. TapeBooth tells you how many recordings and how much space before it deletes them.
- Everything: remove TapeBooth from Chrome. Chrome deletes its private storage with it: every recording, edit, thumbnail and setting.
Files you downloaded are ordinary files on your computer and stay where you saved them.
Collection and sharing
TapeBooth does not transmit your recordings, camera, microphone, screen, browsing, settings or usage information to the developer or to anyone else. It has no server, analytics, advertising, tracking or account system, and it does not sell or share user data. You decide where a downloaded video goes.
Permissions
TapeBooth asks for six permissions, and Chrome shows no warning for any of them when you add it.
- Active tab and scripting let TapeBooth place its controls on the tab you clicked it on, only when you start recording there or ask for the controls.
- Offscreen runs the recorder in a hidden extension page, so recording continues while you use your tabs.
- Storage keeps your settings and the state of a recording in progress. Unlimited storage lets long recordings fit without Chrome clearing them.
- Alarms check every 30 seconds that a recording is still running, so an interrupted one can be recovered.
TapeBooth asks for no host permissions and no optional permissions.
Limited use
TapeBooth uses what you record, your camera and microphone only to provide its single purpose: recording your tab, a window or your screen, with webcam and microphone, and editing the recording on your device. This use complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Children
TapeBooth is a general-purpose recording tool used by teachers and students. It collects no personal information from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If a future version handles data differently, this page will be updated before that version is published, with a new effective date.
